Spartan Hockey Adds Cesana and DeRidder for 2018-19

EAST LANSING - Michigan State hockey head coach Danton Cole announced today (Nov. 14) that defenseman Dennis Cesana (Providence, R.I./Brooks Bandits) and goaltender Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich./USNTDP U-18) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Spartans for the 2018-19 season.

Danton Cole on Dennis Cesana: “Dennis is having an outstanding season with Brooks of the AJHL and is one of the top offensive defensemen in Western Canada. We are creating a strong leadership culture here and as a captain of his team, Dennis will be a part of our leadership here. Like Drew, he has been a part of championship teams including being one of the top performers at last year’s Royal Bank Cup.”

In his second season with Brooks Bandits of the AJHL where leads the team in points with 26 (5g, 21a) in 23 games … Ranks 10th in the AJHL in points and is the league’s highest-scoring defenseman … His 21 assists are second most in the league … Team captain … Produced 52 points (12g, 40a) in 59 games for Brooks in 2016-17, which ranked second among all defensemen in the AJHL … His 40 assists were 12th most in the league … Recorded 16 points (6g, 10a) in 13 playoff games in helping lead the Bandits to the 2017 AJHL’s Centennial Cup title … Played for Kimball Union Academy and the Boston Jr. Bruins Selects U18 team in 2015-16 … Had 34 points (7g, 27a) in 35 games for Kimball Union and then eight points (4g, 4a) in 14 games for the Jr. Bruins … Also played for Kimball Union in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Danton Cole on Drew DeRidder: “Drew is one of the top goalies in the world in the 2000 birth year. He has excelled and won at every level and will bring a fiercely competitive spirit to Spartan hockey next year. His training and experience with the NTDP will help him be ready to be a factor here on day one.”

Owns a 2.20 GAA, a .921 save percentage and a 7-3 record in 13 appearances this season for the U.S. National Team Development Program U-18 team … Recorded back-to-back shutout wins against the Muskegon Lumberjacks (10/14) with 34 saves and then Dartmouth (10/20) with 39 stops … Has a 1.57 GAA and .942 save percentage in three games against USHL opponents … Led the USA to a gold medal at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, going 4-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .949 save percentage … Played the 2016-17 season for Cedar Rapids in the USHL where he posted a 3.27 GAA and .890 save percentage in 41 games … Played midget hockey for the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies in 2015-16, recording a 2.08 GAA and .929 save percentage in 21 games.
