East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State sophomore forward Derek Grant (Abbotsford, British Columbia) has earned CCHA Offensive Player of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office on Monday morning. This is the winger's first weekly honor of the season, and is the third in five weeks of playing season for the Spartans.
Grant earned the kudos after a a five-point weekend (+2),against Big Ten rival Ohio State. Grant scored his first goal of the season and added an assist on Friday. He had a three-helper night on Saturday, and ranks sixth in the CCHA with eight assists on the season.
Grant's 1-8-9 puts him tied for second in points on his team, and he leads the Spartans in assists. Grant was an Honorable Mention pick to the CCHA All-Rookie Team a year ago after a 30-point season, and was named last October's CCHA Rookie of the Month. In 48 career games, he has a 13-26-39 scoring line. He is third among active players in career points.
Grant is the third player this season to earn CCHA weekly honors. Brock Shelgren was the Defensive Player of the Week after the Maine series, while Drew Palmisano was the Goaltender of the Week on Oct. 23.
The Spartans, 4-3-3 on the season, travel to Notre Dame this weekend for a CCHA series against the Irish. The teams face off on Friday at 7:35 p.m., then on Saturday at 5:05.
