Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer To 1-0 Victory Over Western Michigan
Oct. 22, 2003
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team converted on a corner kick in the 82nd minute to earn a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Western Michigan on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Old College Field. With the win, MSU improves to 9-3-2, while WMU falls to 10-6. Michigan State controlled the game for most of the first half, outshooting Western Michigan, 9-3, but could not convert on any scoring chances. The Broncos developed more of an offensive attack in the second half, but the game remained scoreless until the final 10 minutes. On a corner kick from the left side, Ryan McMahen (So., Munster, Ind.) sailed the ball across the mouth of the goal to Thomas Trivelloni (Sr., Mt. Clemens) whose header found the back of the net, giving MSU a 1-0 lead. "I'm very proud of our team today," said MSU head coach Joe Baum. "We played good defense and kept banging the ball at the net. It was a very workman-like effort and I knew that eventually we would find a way to score. It was difficult to come off an emotional win on Sunday against Penn State and play today in front of a smaller crowd in cold weather, but we kept working." Spartan goalkeeper Mike Robinson (Sr., Troy) stopped four Bronco shots to record his fourth shutout of the season. Michigan State returns to action on Sunday at Wisconsin in the final Big Ten game of the season. The Spartans will then wrap up the regular season at home on Oct. 31 against Bowling Green (3 p.m.) and Nov. 2 against Notre Dame (1 p.m.)
