KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team tied Western Michigan, 2-2, on Wednesday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Spartans held a 2-1 lead in the final minutes of the second half until the Broncos tied the game in the 86th minute. With the tie, MSU stands at 8-5-1, while WMU holds an 8-6-2 record.
Michigan State got on the board early as senior forward Jordan Gruber (Beverly Hills, Mich.) scored his eighth goal of the season in the fifth minute. Junior midfielder Steve Doster (Frankfort, Ill.) took a shot that the Bronco goalkeeper saved, but the ball bounced right to Gruber at the far post where he capitalized on the opportunity. The goal ties Gruber for the team lead with senior forward John Minagawa-Webster (Monroe, Mich.).
Western Michigan tied the score on a Ryan Goldman goal in the 19th minute. The game remained tied until halftime, although MSU held a 9-4 advantage in shots.
In the second half, MSU continued to fire shots at the Bronco goal. For the half, MSU had eight shots, but WMU goalkeeper Ian Spooner made five saves. The Spartans finally broke through at 74:59 when junior midfielder Ryan McMahen (Munster, Ind.) took a pass from freshman forward Kenzo Webster (Monroe, Mich.) and put it on goal. Spooner got a hand on the shot, but it still managed to trickle over the goal line.
MSU held onto its lead until Mikey John-Williams scored a tying goal at 85:04. On the play, he one-timed a volley just over the head of Spartan sophomore goalkeeper Jason Tillman (Brighton, Mich.) from 30 yards out.
In two overtime periods, MSU outshot WMU, 5-3, but Spooner made three saves to preserve the tie.
Michigan State will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 31, when the Spartans host Wisconsin at Old College Field at 1 p.m.
