EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 9 Northwestern scored a goal in each half to defeat the 16th-ranked Michigan State men's soccer team, 2-0, Sunday at Northwestern's Lakeside Field. The loss is just the second of the season for the Spartans, who fall to 11-2-3 on the year and 2-2-1 in Big Ten play. Northwestern moves to 10-3-2 and 3-2-1.
NU's Piero Bellizzi gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at the 6:20 mark on a shot from eight yards out. Eamon O'Neill put the Spartans down a pair of when he scored on a breakaway from the top of the box.
Northwestern outshot MSU, 12-8, and the Spartans managed just two tries on goal. NU goalkeeper Justin Pines got the shutout and only had to make one save in the process. MSU senior goalkeeper Chris Austin had three saves.
Sophomore Jeff Ricondo came off the bench to lead MSU with three shots. Carl Pett, who assisted on Belizzi's goal, led all players with four shots.
The Spartans return to action at Cincinnati on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
