EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State goalkeeper Chris Austin made two saves during Penn State's five rounds of penalty kicks and the Spartans made all four of their attempts to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship at Old College Field. Although the game is officially recorded as a 0-0 tie, Michigan State advances to face Indiana on Friday at 1:30 p.m. MSU now stands at 11-4-4, while Penn State is 7-8-4.
MSU's Doug DeMartin had the first good scoring chance of the game in the 18th minute. From 25 yards out, he rocketed a shot towards the upper left corner of the goal, only to have Penn State's Conrad Taylor make a diving stop. Penn State's first dangerous chance came in the 34th minute. Treavor Gelsinger received the ball with his back to the goal 10 yards out. He turned and fired, but the shot was high. In the 37th minute, DeMartin missed with a volley off a pass from Louis Stephens III, sending his low shot just outside the left post.
With just under 26 minutes left in the second half, Penn State's Daniel Martini sent in a hard shot from 30 yards out. MSU goalie Chris Austin cleanly caught the ball.
Neither team could score in regulation, sending the contest into overtime. Michigan State had a free kick from 25 yards out midway through the first extra stanza, courtesy of a yellow card. Kenzo Webster's shot made it through the wall of defenders, but Taylor made the stop. In the 99th minute, Gelsinger received a flick from Salvatico, giving him a clean shot at goal. His one-time shot went just wide right, as the teams ended the first overtime period tied at zero.
The Spartans had the best chance of the second overtime period. Webster sent a pass to DeMartin who had snuck behind the PSU defense. From 18 yards out, he flicked the ball over Taylor's head, but also just over the crossbar. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the contest moved to penalty kicks.
