NCAA Championship Second Round
November 25, 2008
DeMartin Stadium, East Lansing, Mich.
MSU Senior Doug DeMartin
On the team's performance...
We were okay. It was tough game. It was tight both ways and there were limited chances. But we knew that coming in, that is how they play, and that is how we play and it was going to be a defensive battle. We had a couple of chances, but we didn't finish them and that was the difference in the game.
On UIC taking PK's...
They had a lot of confidence taking PK's. They had done it a few times and they have a really experienced goalie. I think that they felt more comfortable doing that, but it just is really hard to lose like that.
On the season...
It was pretty unbelievable. We won the (Big Ten) regular season for the first time in school history. We won the tournament for only the second time and hopefully it acts as steps for the program. It will be something that we look back on for the rest of our lives.
MSU Sophomore Avery Steinlage
On the game going into penalty kicks...
I think that they felt confident heading into the shootout and that was what they wanted. But it still hurts. You never want to lose, especially with the six seniors that we have that are so great with all that they have done for the program.
MSU Sophomore Spencer Thompson
On the game coming down to the wire...
It's tough when a team sits back like that, it's tough to break them down and score a goal. They sat in well and defended well and we just couldn't pull away.
On the success of the team this season...
The beginning of the season was tough, we were 2-4, but we switched some things around and turned the season into magic. We won the regular season Big Ten championship and then the Big Ten tournament championship. It is just really disappointing that we lost here today because we had such a special season, and I want to be able to look back on this season as a great memory, but it is just hard right now with the loss.
