Michigan State And Eastern Michigan Battle to Standoff in Men's Soccer
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Eastern Michigan junior Mo Hijazi's (Dearborn) second goal of the game early in the second half enabled the this afternoon in men's soccer action at Old College Field on the MSU campus.
The Spartans rallied from a 1-0 deficit and took a 2-1 lead at the intermission as freshman Ryan Ferguson (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior Chris Slosar (Grand Blanc) tallied for MSU, the second goal of the year for both players. MSU enjoyed a decided edge in the play during the second half and overtime and had several opportunities to snap the deadlock, but couldn't make the most of its opportunites. The Spartans had 13 shot attempts in the final half of play compared to EMU's one and finished the contest with an 18-6 advantage in that department. MSU also recorded a 10-4 bulge in corner kicks. EMU sophomore goalkeeper George Tomasso recorded nine saves for the Eagles while MSU junior Matt Shumlas had two stops.
The tie leaves MSU's record at 1-0-2 and EMU now stands 0-1-2. The Spartans open Big Ten play this Saturday (Sept. 6) at Northwestern.
