Men's Soccer Alumni Update
March 1, 2010
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Three former Michigan State men's soccer players have found new homes in professional soccer. After time in the Kansas City Wizards organization, Rauwshan McKenzie is currently working out with MLS Cup Champions Real Salt Lake, fellow defender Greg Janicki signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Doug DeMartin signed with the Portland Timbers.
Both McKenzie and Janicki played in the MLS last season as McKenzie played five games with the Wizards and Janicki saw action in seven games for D.C. United. While McKenzie will remain in the MLS this season, Janicki and DeMartin signed with teams that will be a part of the MLS' 2011 expansion. Both the Whitecaps and Timbers are currently members of the United Soccer League. DeMartin was part of the Timbers recent mini-camp and signed a contract for the 2010 season just last week.
"It's great to see former Spartans getting a chance at the next level," said MSU head coach Damon Rensing. "Greg and Rauwshan have each started in the MLS and have shown the ability to play at that level. Doug had a tough injury last year that kept him from signing with Kansas City. I am really excited to see his hard work pay off in Portland. This is a testament to both these individuals hard work and the program's ability to create an environment that will help players move on to the next level. I'm looking forward to following their careers and the other MSU players playing professional soccer."
