Sept. 3, 2009
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team will open the 2009 campaign under first-year head coach Damon Rensing on Friday (Sept. 4) against Duquesne at 5 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans are coming off a 2008 season that saw them capture both the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships.
"We're excited to get going on Friday," said Rensing. "Duquesne is a sold opponent. They are in the Atlantic 10 which is a good, good soccer conference."
After serving the last 10 years as an assistant coach under the legendary Joe Baum, Rensing begins his first season as head coach for the Spartans.
The Spartans return six of their 11 starters from last year's squad, including junior goalkeeper Avery Steinlage who enters this season with a shutout streak of 805:03. Steinlage led the nation in save percentage last season.
