Spartan Duo Honored by Big Ten
Sept. 20, 2010
East Lansing, Mich. - Two members of the 19th-ranked Michigan State men's soccer team were awarded Big Ten Player of the Week laurels, as announced today (Sept. 20). Mid-fielder Cyrus Saydee (Lansing, Mich.) shared the Offensive Player of the Week award, and goalkeeper Avery Steinlage (Grand Haven, Mich.) took home the Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Saydee secured his first weekly conference accolade after leading the 19th-ranked Spartans to wins against Big East foes Marquette and Notre Dame over the weekend. The junior notched his first goal of the season - and the lone goal of the contest- in Michigan State's 1-0 win against the Golden Eagles on Friday. The midfielder then tallied assists on both of Michigan State's tallies against the Fighting Irish on Sunday, helping the Spartans to a 2-0 road win. The two assists pushed Saydee's season total to five, good for second among Big Ten players.
Steinlage receives the nod for Defensive Player of the Week after leading Michigan State to back-to-back shutout victories. The senior made seven saves in the Spartans' 1-0 win over Marquette on Friday before posting a six-save effort against Notre Dame on Sunday, leading Michigan State to the 2-0 win. The keeper currently holds a scoreless streak of 336:24, spanning five games. The honor marks the fifth of Steinlage's career.
The Spartans will travel to Pittsburgh on Wednesday (Sept. 22), to face Duquesne University before beginning conference play on Sunday (Sept. 24) against Northwestern. Wednesday's kickoff is at 7:00p.m., with a Sunday game time of 2:00p.m. at DeMartin Stadium.
