Janicki Named Big Ten Offensive Player Of The Week
Oct. 23, 2006
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior stopper Greg Janicki was named Co-Big Ten Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Penn State's David Grey, as announced by the conference office Oct. 23. Janicki is the first Spartan to earn the weekly accolade since Jordan Gruber on Sept. 6, 2004.
Janicki earns the honor after scoring the game-winning goal in each of Michigan State's two wins last week. Janicki scored from 20 yards out in the 23rd minute in a 2-0 win over Valparaiso on Oct. 18. The goal was the first of the three-year starter's career.
Janicki followed that performance with the second score of his career, on Oct. 22, helping MSU pull off a come-from-behind, double overtime 2-1 win over Northwestern. It was the Spartans' first Big Ten victory of the season. With 2:02 remaining in the second overtime, Janicki headed in the golden goal. The Green and White trailed 1-0 for the first 73 minutes of the contest, and was out-shot, 13-12. Marking its ninth victory (9-5-2, 1-2-2 Big Ten) of the year, Michigan State surpassed its win total (8) from last season.
