Men's Soccer Garners Two Conference Players of the Week

Nov. 3, 2008

EAST LANSING, Mich. - A day after defeating No. 6 Northwestern, 1-0, to win the program's first Big Ten regular-season championship, senior Louis Stephens III and sophomore goalkeeper Avery Steinlage were both recognized for their efforts by being named Players of the Week by the conference office on Monday (Nov. 3).

Stephens, a forward, earned Offensive Player of the Week accolades, scoring three goals in two games last week. On Wednesday (Oct. 29), in a 4-0 win over Bowling Green, he scored two goals, one of which was the game-winner. In Sunday's win over Northwestern, Stephens scored the only goal of the game to give MSU the conference title. The Saginaw native is now tied for second on the team in points with 12.

Steinlage was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and made 12 saves in the two wins last week, playing 164:06 of scoreless soccer. Since allowing a penalty kick goal against UIC in a 3-1 win on Oct. 15, Steinlage has posted a 515:03 shutout streak. The Grand Haven native now has seven shutouts this season and ranks second in the Big Ten in save percentage (.911) and saves per-game (5.86).
