Spartan Defender Janicki Named Second-Team NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region
Nov. 30, 2006
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior defender Greg Janicki (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) wrapped up a career that included 57 consecutive starts by earning his second post-season honor, as the National Soccer Coaches Association announced Janicki as a second-team member of the NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region team.
Janicki, who was already named to the All-Big Ten First Team earlier this year, helped the Spartans to a 10-6-2 record. A three-year starter at stopper, Janicki tallied the first goal of his career on Oct. 18 against Valparaiso, lifting the Spartans to a 2-0 win. He followed up the performance in the next outing with the second goal of his career, a header against Northwestern in a 2-1 win. The defender earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors for his two game-winning goals.
The stopper helped the Spartans to 24 shutouts in the last three years, as he started a string of 57 consecutive games on the defensive line. In the last two seasons, he helped the Green and White allow less than a goal a game, as the stingy defense he anchored allowed just 0.83 goals per contest in 2005 and 0.75 goals per game in 2006.
With one assist on the season, Janicki's five points eclipsed his previous career high of two, both points coming on assists, during his junior season. In 62 career games, Janicki compiled two goals and four assists for eight points.
