EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer senior Doug DeMartin and women's soccer freshman Laura Heyboer were each named semifinalists for the -Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Awards. Each is one of 15 student-athletes to be nominated for both the men's and women's awards. The awards are considered the nation's most prestigious college soccer honors.

Heyboer, a Hudsonville, Mich., native was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Her 21 goals rank in a tie for third in the nation while her 51 points are good for a fourth-place tie.

DeMartin was the first Spartan since 1996 to earn Big Ten Player of the Year honors after leading the conference in goals (17) and points (37) all season. The Mason, Mich., native was also the first in the history of the program to earn first-team Academic All-America honors.

Candidates for each award will be voted on by National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I college head coaches. The three finalists for each award will be announced Friday, Dec. 12 while the winners will be declared Friday, Jan. 9, 2009.
