Spartans Pick Up Three Wins in 2012 Opener

Junior Denis Bogatov picked up two singles victories and a pair of doubles wins in the Spartans' 3-0 sweep on Saturday.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team improved to 3-0 on Saturday afternoon picking up dual wins over Wright State, Bradley and Morehead State. The Spartans played host to a four-team round robin out at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, with each school facing the other three in individual duals.

The Spartans kicked off the morning with a clean 7-0 sweep over Wright State. In doubles action, Mat Nelson and Andrew Lied posted an 8-4 victory over Joblin and Clark. Austin Brooks and Harry Jadun defeated Neuman and Lyzwa with a score of 8-3 and Denis Bogatov and Doug Zade picked up the 8-5 win over Arguello and Pineda to round out doubles action.

On the singles side, the Spartans lost only one set against the Raiders. Bogatov played in the singles number one position and easily defeated Arguello 6-1, 6-1. In the number two spot, Ronnie Hulewicz took home a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lyzwa and Gijs Linders easily topped Neuman 6-1, 6-2.

In the final three match-ups against the Raiders, Will Davis dropped the first set against a tough opponent in Bourbon, but bounced back, picking up the next two sets and easily walking away with the 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory. In the fifth singles spot, Nelson added to his doubles win with a singles victory over Yun, 6-1, 6-1 and sophomore Ryan Richmond defeated the Raider's Rahnasto, 6-4, 6-4, to give the Spartans the clean sweep.

In their second match-up of the day, the Spartans faced off against Bradley, coming away with the 5-2 win and improved to 2-0.

MSU opened play against the Braves with three doubles victories. Bogatov and Jadun defeated Kalhorn and Albitar, 8-2. Linders and Davis picked up the 8-5 win over Cuadrado and Abrams and Hulewicz and Nelson paired up to defeat Weerasinghe and Romanet, 8-3.

MSU only lost two match-ups on the doubles side. Playing in the top singles spot Brooks picked up the easy victory over Bradley's Gabriel Townes, following Townes retirement in the second set (7-5, 1-0, ret.). Lied easily won his first singles match of the day over Albitar, 6-0, 6-3 and Linders again played in the number three singles spot but had no problems with BU's Davis winning easily with a score of 6-0, 6-1.

After picking up his first singles victory earlier in the morning, Davis struggled against a tough opponent in Bradley's Arthur Romanet. Davis dropped the first set, 5-7 and pushed the second set all the way to 6-4 but couldn't quite get the victory losing (10-7) in the tie breaker.

Richmond also saw his first defeat of the day losing to Nguyen 7-5, 6-3 but Jadun rounded out the Spartans' play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Eric Nguyen.

MSU vs. Morehead State

In their final match-up of the day, MSU picked up the easy 5-0 victory over the Eagles, following Morehead State's decision to not play the final two singles match-ups. The Spartan's improved to 3-0 on the day and in dual action for the season.

To start off doubles play, the pair of Lied and Linders each got a second doubles victory for the day over White and Martin with an 8-5 score. Hulewicz and Davis played in the number two doubles spot. They were tested by the Eagles' Hugo Almonte and Seve Day, narrowly defeating them with a score of 9-8 (7-2). The duo of Zade and Richmond gave the Spartans' their ninth victory in doubles action on the day with an 8-2 victory over Clifford and Shafik.

MSU swept Morehead State, 4-0 in singles action, despite not playing the final two singles match-ups on the slate.

Hulewicz moved up to the top singles position in the night match-up and picked up the win after Morehead State's Harlow retired in the second set, (6-3, 2-1, ret.).

Bogatov finished off the day with his third singles win. This one came over White with an easy 6-1, 6-1 decision. Brooks rounded out the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Martin and Lied easily defeated Almonte, 6-0, 6-0 in the Spartans' final match.

Overall, MSU went a perfect 9-0 in doubles action throughout the course of the day and only dropped two singles match-ups against Bradley to give them a 14-2 singles record over the spread of the round-robin competition. The Spartans' dominate performance improved them to 3-0 in dual play, preparing them for the thick of their season throughout the rest of the semester.

The Green and White are right back in action this Friday, January 20 to host Mississippi State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility at 6 p.m. The team then picks up for a quick turn-around and heads to Indianapolis on Sunday, January 22. to compete against Kentucky at 2 p.m. and IUPUI at 7p.m.
