Men's Tennis Earns Narrow Victory Over No. 40 South Carolina
Spartans finish 1-1 this weekend vs. ranked opponents.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team concluded its final match at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Lexington, Ky., with a 4-3 win over the No. 40 Gamecocks of South Carolina.
The Gamecocks took an early lead by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Juniors Drew Lied and Aaron Pfister fell in the top spot to Tsvetan Mihov and Chip Cox 8-4, while senior Denis Bogatov and freshman JP Mullane fell at No. 3 to Thiago Pinheiro and Ben Barnette, 8-5. Sophomores Gijs Linders and Harry Jadun picked up an 8-6 win at No. 2 over Kyle Koch and Harry Menzies.
Mullane redeemed his loss in doubles play to put MSU on the board, with an impressive 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Thiago Pinheiro. Two Spartan victories followed, with Pfister and Linders also taking their matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 position, Pfister defeated Tsvetan Mihov 6-4, 6-3, while Linders and took down Koch at No. 3 6-4, 6-1.
The Gamecocks brought the match to 3-2 with a win at the No. 2 position, where Chip Cox defeated Drew Lied 6-4, 6-4. Harry Menzies tied the match at three with a win at the No. 5 position with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Denis Bogatov.
Despite the late rally from the Gamecocks, MSU sealed the narrow victory in the final singles match. Senior Will Davis defeated Ben Barnette at the No. 6 position 6-4, 6-2, to move the Spartans to 4-2 on the season.
MSU will continue action next weekend, when they host Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
