MADISON, Wis. - The Michigan State men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday, Feb. 24 in Madison, Wis. The loss brings the Spartans overall record to 4-7 and 0-1 in Big Ten action. The Badgers advanced to 5-3 on the season.

 

In singles action, Michigan State saw tiebreakers and third sets but it was not enough to give the Spartans victories. At No. 1, sophomore Nick Rinks was defeated by Jeremy Sonkin, 6-3, 7-6. Nolan Polley knocked off sophomore Adam Monich, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 2 and Brennen Phippen pulled out a 6-1, 7-7 (10-3) victory over freshman John Allare. Wisconsin also earned points at the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots.

 

In doubles, all three victories went to Wisconsin. UW's Sonkin and Polley teamed up at No. 1 to knock off the Spartan duo of Rinks and Monich, 9-8 (10-8). At No. 2, Gian Hodgson and Brennen Phippen defeated Allare and freshman Alex Forger, 8-3, to clinch the doubles point for the Badgers.


 

 

 

Michigan State will continue weekend action tomorrow when they head to Evanston, Ill. to face Northwestern. They will look to advance their record to 5-7 when competition begins at 6 p.m.
