Men's Tennis Squeezes Past Butler, 4-3

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Spartans men's tennis team shook off their losing ways and beat the Butler Bulldogs today, 4-3. MSU faced Butler in the first match of a double-header and will play Cleveland State later today. With its win, Michigan State improves to 5-11 overall.
Butler swept all three doubles matches to start the meet. No. 1 doubles pair Nick Rinks (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Adam Monich (Ann Arbor, Mich,) fell to Brandon Gill and Parker Ross, 8-6. Junior Joseph McWilliams (Aurora, Ill.) and freshman John Allare (Maineville, Ohio) lost their No. 2 doubles match by a score of 8-5.
At the No. 3 slot the duo of Scott Rasmussen (Morga, Calif.) and Mike Flowers (Memphis, Tenn.) was downed, 8-3.
The Spartans' fortunes turned in singles play, led by sophomore Rinks, who defeated James Low in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Allare also chipped in with a win in at No. 3 singles, where he beat Ross, 6-4, 6-2.
The last two matches of the meet saw McWilliams and Monich battling Butler to earn the Spartans their first win since late January. McWilliams took his No. 5 singles match from Evan West, 6-2, 7-6 (4), while Monich took his first set, 6-2, but lost the next to Gill, 6-4. After a back and forth third set, Monich finally prevailed, winning the last set, 7-5.
The only Spartans to fall in singles action were Flowers and Rasmussen. Flowers lost in straight sets to senior Andy Bartish, while Rasmussen fell, 6-3, 6-4, to Eric Breitenbach.
Michigan State men's tennis plays again today, at 6:00 p.m., at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility as they take on Cleveland State. The Spartans continue Big Ten play on April 1, when MSU host the Iowa Hawkeyes.
