EAST LANSING, Mich. - In the second game of a double-header, Michigan State's men's tennis team beat the Cleveland State Vikings, 7-0. The victory gave the Spartans their second win of the day and improved their overall record to 6-11.
Sophomore combo Nick Rinks (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Adam Monich (Ann Arbor, Mich.) defeated Oliver Dhaine and Jay Tee in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6. The Spartans locked up the doubles point when John Allare and Joseph McWilliams were also victorious at the No. 2 doubles by the same score.
The only Spartan loss of the match came when sophomore Steven Wipprecht and freshman Brad Groleski downed Scott Rasmussen and Mike Flowers, 8-5.
In singles play, Rinks and Monich both coasted to victories. Rinks defeated Dhaine, 6-1, 6-3, while Monich disposed of Tee, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Allare also won in straight sets, beating Rob West, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 3 singles match.
In sweeping the Vikings, Flowers and Rasmussen earned victories to stop lengthy winless streaks. Flowers took the first set from Groleski, 6-4, but Groleski rebounded to take the second set, 6-2. The two played a ten point tie-breaker for the match, which Flowers won, 1-0 (10-5), giving him his first win since January.
Rasmussen defeated Wipprecht, 6-1, 6-1, earning his first notch in the win column since Feburary.
McWilliams also won his second singles match of the day, 6-4, 7-6 (4), when he defeated Dan Singer in the No.5 singles match.
The Spartans look to continue their winning ways when they continue Big Ten play and take on the Iowa Hawkeyes on April 1, in East Lansing. Play will begin at noon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
