Illinois Men's Tennis Tops Michigan State, 5-2

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois - The Michigan State men's tennis team was defeated by Illinois, 5-2, Saturday, April 8, on the Atkin Tennis Center outdoor courts. Michigan State's record falls to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten while the Fighting Illini advance to 14-5 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten.
Michigan State lost the doubles point, falling to Illinois in all three of the match-ups. At No. 1, sophomore Nick Rinks and sophomore Adam Monich were defeated by Ruben Gonzales and Ryan Rowe, 8-3. Brandon Davis and Marc Spicijaric took the 8-6 victory at No. 2 over freshman John Allare and junior Joseph McWilliams while freshman Scott Rasmussen and junior Michael Flowers fell to Pramod Dabir and G.D. Jones, 8-2.
The Spartan victories came at Nos. 1 and 6 singles. After falling in the second set, No. 117 Rinks upset No. 64 Jones in a super-tiebreaker, netting the point, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 10-5. At No. 6, Rasmussen defeated Brandon Davis, 1-4, after Davis was forced to quiet due to a hamstring injury.
In the other singles matches, all points were decided in two sets. At No. 2, No. 60 Rowe defeated Monich, 6-3, 6-3 while at No. 3, Allare dropped a 7-5, 6-0 decision to Gonzales. Illinois clinched the overall victory at No. 4 when Spicijaric pulled out a 6-2, 6-3, win over Flowers. At No. 5, McWilliams lost 6-3, 6-0 to Dabir.
Michigan State will stay on the road tomorrow when it heads to West Lafayette, Ind., to face the Purdue Boilermakers. The match is set to begin at Noon and will be held on the Varsity Tennis Outdoor Courts or the Lafayette Sports Center, depending on weather.
