Purdue Men's Tennis Edge Spartans, 4-3

West Lafeyette, Ind. - Michigan State men's tennis dropped a 4-3 decision to the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday, April 9 at the Purdue Varsity Tennis Courts. Purdue improved to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten play, while the Spartans dropped to 7-14 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
In doubles, Michigan State netted two victories. Purdue earned the first doubles win at No. 2 when Eric Hodgman and Griffin Nienberg defeated freshman John Allare and junior Joseph McWilliams, 8-4. The nationally ranked duo of sophomores Nick Rinks and Adam Monich gave MSU its first doubles win at No. 1 when they knocked off Colin Foster and Kurt Zaske, 8-4. The doubles point came down to the duo of freshman Scott Rasmussen and junior Michael Flowers at No. 3. In an 8-5 victory over Jose Fuenmayor and Scott Warner, the duo clinched the doubles point for MSU.
Singles did not fare as well with only two Spartans recording victories. At No. 4, Flowers dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Jarred Leibner while at No. 5, McWilliams fell to Zaske, 6-2, 6-1. Monich also was defeated by Foster at No. 2, 6-4, 6-4. The Spartans first singles point came from Rinks, who is nationally ranked No. 117, when he defeated Warner in two sets, 7-5, 6-3. The match-clinching point came down to three sets at No. 6. Rasmussen, who battled back to win the second set, was knocked out, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5, against Nienberg. The last point went to MSU at No. 3, when Allare earned a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win against Hodgman.
The Spartans will look to improve their record next Saturday when they host Ohio State. The match will begin at noon and will be held at either the Varsity Outdoor Courts or the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, depending on weather conditions.
