Men's Tennis Takes Down Purdue, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team posted its first conference win over Purdue, 5-2, on Saturday, April 17, putting it at an overall 13-11 record.
The Spartan duo of freshman Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) and junior John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.) defeated Branko Kuzmanovic and Slavko Bijelica, 8-6, at the No. 1 doubles spot but Purdue was able to pick up the first point after taking the remaining two matches.The tone of the match quickly changed in MSU's favor as it went on to earn five of the six singles wins.
"The guys played very well," said head coach Gene Orlando. "It was senior day, our last home match of the season and we responded well after losing the doubles point. We are working hard and getting closer in every match we play, and I'm glad we found a way to close this one out."
Sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) dominated at the No. 1 spot over Slavko Bijelica, 6-1, 6-0, while Brooks won in similar fashion over P.J. Rose, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Freshman Denis Bogatov (Gurnee, Ill.) outlasted Branko Kuzmanovic at No. 3 singles in what was the closest match of the day, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3). Senior Joe Vallee (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) posted a win at No. 5 singles over Paul Foley, 6-3, 6-4, while junior Clark Richardson finished the match off with a victory over Thomas Wilson, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) at No. 6 singles.
The Spartans hit the road as they face Indiana and Illinois in their final matches of the 2010 season. The match against Indiana will take place in Bloomington, Ind. at 12 p.m., and the match against Illinois will be played in Champaign, Ill. at 12 p.m. as well.
