No. 57 Men's Tennis Topped by Illini, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 57 Michigan State men's tennis team fell in its final home match today (April 17) against No. 17 Illinois, 5-2. The Spartans started off strong by winning the doubles point, but were able to win only one singles match.
Freshman Drew Lied paired with senior John Stratton at the No. 1doubles spot, taking down Hamui and Souza, 9-7. Freshman Aaron Pfister and junior Austin Brooks sealed the doubles point as they defeated Hoh and Singh in the No. 2 position, 8-5. Senior Jason Norville and junior Mat Nelson fell in the No. 3 slot, 8-5, to Alden and Nevolo.
Stratton earned the lone Spartan victory in singles, as he took down Hoh in the No. 5 spot, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Pfister fell in only his second dual singles match of the season, as he was defeated by Singh, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 3 position. Brooks also fell in a tightly contested match in the No. 2 spot, as he was taken down by Kalamonovich, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 1 position, sophomore Denis Bogatov fell to Nevolo, 6-0, 6-4, while junior Ronnie Hulewicz was topped by Hamui in the No. 4 slot, 6-1, 6-4. Lied was defeated by Souza in the No. 6 position, 6-3, 6-3.
The Spartans conclude their regular season when they travel to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern on Friday, April 22 at 7 p.m. ET.
