April 18, 1998

MADISON, WI - The Wisconsin men's tennis team swept the doubles and won four of six singles matches to record their sixth straight win in the Big Ten Saturday afternoon over Michigan State, 5-2, at the outdoor courts at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The six-match conference win streak is the longest since 1990-91 and the second longest in Coach Klingelhoets' fifteen years at Wisconsin.

In doubles, seniors Tony Pederson and Jeff Malik got the first win for Wisconsin at No. 3 in a 8-3 win over Ivica Primorac and Francisco Trinidad. Mark Loughrin and Adam Schumacher captured the doubles point at No. 1 by defeating Ken Kigongo and Chris Struck, 8-5.

With Wisconsin leading 3-1 in the match, sophomore David Chang clinched the fourth point and win by downing Ben Hetzler in two sets, 6-4, 6-4, after trailing 4-3 in the second set. Chang's win was his first of the season in the Big Ten. Mark Loughrin defeated the No. 94 nationally ranked singles player, Trey Eubanks, easily in two sets, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1.

Other Wisconsin singles victories came from Jeff Malik who recorded his ninth consecutive win overall and sixth in the Big Ten by defeating Ken Kigongo at No. 5, 6-2, 6-4. Adam Schumacher extended his win streak to five matches overall and in the Big Ten with a three set victory over Francisco Trinidad, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Schumacher and Malik hold the best Big Ten singles records on Wisconsin's roster at 7-1 against conference foes.

"This was a tough win for us against Michigan State," Coach Pat Klingelhoets said. "David Chang really stepped it up for us when the team needed it. It was a huge win for him and for Wisconsin."
