Men's Tennis Falls to No. 44 Indiana in Big Ten Championship
April 29, 2010 BLOOMINTON, Ind. - The Michigan State men's tennis team (13-14, 1-9) fell 4-0 to the sixth-seeded and No. 44 Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten Championship on Thursday, April 29, in Bloomington, Ind., to conclude the 2009-10 season. IU picked up the doubles point after posting wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Indiana's double pairing of Jeremy Langer and Santiago Gruter defeated senior Joe Vallee (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and junior Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.), 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. The Hoosier tandem of Alexander van Gils and Isade Juneau posted a win over freshman Christian Roehmer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) and junior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) at No. 3 doubles by the same, 8-2, margin. Langer went on to top sophomore Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2, while Gruter posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Norville at No. 4 singles. Indiana's Will Kendall picked up the win at No. 6 singles when he defeated freshman Will Davis (Louisville, Ky.), 6-2, 6-2.
The No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles matches went unfinished. At No. 1, sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) was fighting back in the second set, but the match concluded with a 6-0, 5-4 tally in Lachlan Ferguson's favor. Freshman Denis Bogatov (Gurnee, Ill) was also in a close mid-second set with Josh MacTaggart of IU when the match was decided, 7-5, 3-2, in the favor of MacTaggart. Vallee picked up the only win for the Spartans in the first set against Juneau at No. 5 singles. The match was ended with a 6-4, 1-4 score.
The Spartans end their 2009-10 campaign with a 13-14 overall finish. #44 Indiana 4, Michigan State 0 Singles competition
