EAST LANSING, Mich.- - The Michigan State men's tennis team advanced to the main draw of the 89th-annual Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Ill., earlier today. MSU was ranked ninth for the tournament, and took on No. 1 Illinois, in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Fighting Illini defeated the Spartans 4-0, moving MSU to 14-12 overall and 5-8 in Big Ten competition.
Since the players have two more Big Ten matches to play this weekend, once a team reached four points, the remaining matches were suspended. In the doubles competition, the MSU combination of Ivica Primorac and Francisco Trinidad dropped a close match to Jakub Teply and Matt Snyder of Illinois, 9-7, at the No. 3 position. At the No. 2 position the Spartan duo of Mark Findling and Ken Kicongo were defeated by Illinois' Gavin Sontag and Brady Blain, 8-1. After MSU lost the doubles point, the No. 1 match was suspended. Illinois' Oliver Freelove and Cary Franklin were defeating the MSU tandem of Chris Struck and Trey Eubanks, 8-8 (6-4), at the time that the match was stopped.
Although MSU did not win a singles match, MSU's Trey Eubanks fell just short of a victory at the No. 1 position. After losing the first game, 6-3, Eubanks came back to take the second game, 4-6, before dropping the third game, 6-3. At the No. 5 position, MSU's Francisco Trinidad was tied with Illinois' Jakub Teply, 2-2, in the first game when his match was suspended. The Spartans will play the winner of the Michigan vs. Wisconsin match for fifth-place in the consolation round of the tournament on May 2, at 2 p.m.
