EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team finished day one of the Frank Beeman Invitational on Friday, Sept. 10, in impressive form, going unbeaten in both singles and doubles play. Representing the A Flight Doubles for the Spartans, freshman Aaron Pfister and senior John Stratton defeated Chouardy and Lam of Chicago State, 8-3, followed by a 9-8 (3) victory by seniors Jason Norville and Clark Richardson over Ismail and Rosa of Youngstown State. Pfister and Stratton will take on Likitkumchorn and Sarria of Toledo tomorrow in the semifinals. Norville and Richardson will compete against Burns and Elezovic in the other semifinal match.
Sophomore Denis Bogatov and junior Ronnie Hulewicz defeated Sztrajtman and Phoon of IPFW, 8-4, while freshman Andrew Lied and sophomore Will Davis rounded out the Spartans' B Flight Doubles with a victory over Campos and Schmerin of Youngstown State, 8-3. Bogatov and Hulewicz are set to face Blomberg and Noel of Western Michigan in the semifinal round, while Lied and Davis will play Dudzik and Weigand of Toledo.
The Spartans continued their success in singles play, tallying victories in all eight singles contests. In the closest match of the afternoon for MSU, Hulewicz defeated Tariq Ismail of Youngstown State, 12-10, in the third set after splitting the first two sets (6-0, 4-6). In the second match of the Green Flight, Denis Bogatov earned a victory over Sam Pecyna of Dayton in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
Victories in the White Flight for the Spartans came from Norville, who defeated Alex Crum of Dayton (6-2, 6-1), and Stratton who earned his first victory over Eduardo Sztrajtman of IPFW (6-1, 6-1). Stratton will face Rodrigo Campos of Youngstown State in the second round while Norville will compete against Felipe Rosa, also from Youngstown State in his second match.
Lied made his Spartan debut in the State Flight with a victory over Tim Saltys of IPFW, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomores Christian Roehmer and Will Davis kept the Spartan streak alive by defeating Tony Kanavos of IPFW, 6-4, 6-0, and Sean Bandy of Dayton, 6-2, 6-4, respectively.
Also making his debut as a Spartan, freshman Aaron Pfister earned his first victory in the Spartan Flight against David Stabley of Dayton, 6-2, 6-1, while Clark Richardson defeated Matt Smith of Duquesne, 6-2, 6-1. Pfister will face Jason Berry of Duquesne in his second match tomorrow, while Richardson will match up against Rob Emig of Youngstown State.
The Spartans continue second round play in both singles and doubles tomorrow (Sept. 11) at 9 a.m. at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, pending weather.
