COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State men's tennis team continued action on the third day of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Columbus, Ohio with both singles and doubles play. The Spartans were unable to advance in the singles main draw, but Sophomore Aaron Pfister and senior Austin Brooks won three matches in doubles play to advance to the round of eight.
The 10th seeded duo defeated Campos and Schmerin of Youngstown State 8-5 in the first round, and topped Indre and Vanderploeg of Western Michigan with a convincing 8-1 victory in the second round. Their third round victory came against 7th seeded Graves and Wolf of Northwestern, 8-5. The duo will face the No. 2 seed Rola and Smith of Ohio State tomorrow.
Four other Spartan duos notched victories before falling in the second round. Junior Christian Roehmer and freshman Doug Zade defeated Chanuturia and Dzanko of DePaul 8-6, while sophomore Drew Lied and freshmen Gijs Linders topped Tenzer and Goepper of Wisconsin-Green Bay by the same score.
Junior Will Davis and senior Ron Hulewicz earned a narrow 9-7 victory against Streeter and Cheung of Detroit, and junior Denis Bogatov and freshman Harry Jadun earned a convincing 8-0 victory over Jones and Ford of Cleveland State.
Despite losses in the main singles draw, three Spartans earned victories in consolation matches. Jadun topped Larson of Wisconsin-Green Bay, while fellow freshman Linders topped Buzzi of Michigan 6-4, 6-1. Davis earned the final victory with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 win over Olivarez of Western Michigan.
Action will continue tomorrow with both singles and doubles final matches.
