COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State men's tennis team began play Thursday at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. Day one's action completed the first and second round of the singles qualifying bracket held at the Varsity Tennis Center and the Racquet Club of Columbus.
Three Spartans competed in Thursday's qualifying. Junior Harry Jadun will play for a spot in the singles main draw after winning his first and second round matches. He defeated IPFW's Andres Cobos 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and took down Notre Dame's Michael Fredericka 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. Friday at 8 a.m. Jadun will face Notre Dame's Kenneth Sabacinski for a spot in the singles main draw, which will begin Friday at 12:15 p.m.
Junior Doug Zade won his first-round qualifying match 7-6 (2), 6-3 over Valparaiso's Eric Honert. He lost in his second round match to Valparaiso's Dave Bacalla 6-1, 6-4.
Senior Will Davis took on Daniel Kang of IPFW in the first round and lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Singles main draw will begin Friday at 12:15 p.m. MSU will have five players in the main draw.
Sophomore John Patrick Mullane will play Northern Illinois' Axel Lagerlof in the first round. Mullane, who advanced to the second round in the ITA All-American Championships singles qualifying draw Sept. 29, has a 1-1 singles record for the fall. Freshman Brett Forman is matched up with Notre Dame's Josh Hagar in the first round. Forman has a 2-2 singles record for the fall, and one of those losses came to Hagar at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational on Oct. 5 -- 6-0, 6-2.
Senior Aaron Pfister will play Andrew Cahn of Western Michigan in the first round. Pfister was named to the Bobby Bayliss All-Tournament Team for his 3-1 singles record during the Oct. 4-6 tournament. Pfister also lost in the first round of singles main qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships. Junior Gijs Linders will play a qualifier for his first-round match. Linders has a 1-1 fall singles record and lost in the first round of singles qualifying at the ITA All-American.
Senior Drew Lied will play Alex Lawson of Notre Dame in the first round. Lied has a 1-1 fall singles record and lost in the first round of the singles main draw at the ITA All-American.
Doubles play begins at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The team of Linders and Pfister will take on Detroit's Jay Joshy and Chance Conley. Lied and Mullane will play DePaul's Sten Leusink and Adam Reinhart. Sophomore Paul Heeder and Zade will play Wisconsin-Green Bay's Michael Tenzer and Howard Scott. Forman and Jadun will face Western Michigan's Ruben Greiner and Michael Treis. Freshman Mac Roy and Davis will play Jovan Zeljkovic and Matt Lynch of Northern Illinois.
