COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State men's tennis team competed Saturday for the third straight day at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Hosted by Ohio State, Saturday's action included the second and third rounds of singles and doubles main draw, as well as singles main draw consolation matches.
Senior Aaron Pfister is moving onto to Sunday's quarterfinal play after winning both of his Saturday matches in the singles main draw. In the second round, he defeated Alex Jesse of Illinois 6-1, 7-6, and in the third round he took down Ohio State's Kevin Metka 6-4, 6-4. He is set to face Ohio State's Peter Kobelt in the quarterfinals. Kobelt is the third-ranked singles player in the country.
Quarterfinal action of singles main draw will begin Sunday at 9 a.m.
Junior Harry Jadun lost to Western Michigan's Nadin Indre 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. Senior Drew Lied defeated Cleveland State's Matt Kuelker 7-6, 6-3 and faced Indre in the third round. Indre defeated Lied 7-5, 6-0.
In consolation matches from the singles main draw bracket, freshman Brett Forman defeated Joey Leto of Wisconsin-Green Bay 6-4, 6-1. Junior Gijs Linders beat Michigan's Kevin Wong 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore John Patrick Mullane took down Valparaiso's Eric Honert 3-6, 7-5, 10-8. Senior Will Davis lost to Strong Kirchheimer of Northwestern 6-2, 6-2.
In the doubles main draw, Pfister and Linders defeated Cleveland State's Ali Shabib and Joe VanMeter in the second round 8-3, but lost to Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon of Illinois in the third round 8-6. Lied and Mullane beat Illinois State's Rolando Torrellas and Jakub Eisner 8-4 in the second round. In the third round, Lied and Mullane faced Michigan's Michael Zhu and Alex Petrone and lost 8-7.
