COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State men's tennis team lost its only match on day four of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Ohio State and is out of the tournament. Sunday's action included quarterfinal play in the singles main draw at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
After Saturday, the Spartans had one player left standing in the brackets. Senior Aaron Pfister, competing in the singles main draw, won his second and third round matches on Saturday to advance to the round of 16. With a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals, Pfister was matched up against Ohio State's Peter Kobelt, who is the third-ranked singles player in the country. Pfister, who is the 77th ranked singles player, lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Pfister finished with a 3-1 singles record for the tournament.
Overall for the tournament, which hosted 21 schools from the Midwest including five Big Ten teams, MSU compiled a 9-9 singles record and a 4-4 doubles record. MSU also went 3-1 in their consolation matches from the singles main draw.
Individually, junior Harry Jadun finished the tournament with a 3-2 singles record and advanced to the second round of the singles main draw. Junior Doug Zade recorded a 1-1 singles record and lost in the second round of singles qualifying.
Senior Will Davis went 0-2 in singles and lost in the first round of singles qualifying. Freshman Brett Forman lost in the first round of singles qualifying as well, but did earn a win in his consolation match over Joey Leto of Wisconsin-Green Bay 6-4, 6-1, to go 1-1 for the tournament. Junior Gijs Linders also finished 1-1 after losing in the first round of singles qualifying but earning a win in the consolation match over Michigan's Kevin Wong 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore John Patrick Mullane beat Eric Honert of Valparaiso 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 in his consolation match after losing in the first round of singles qualifying.
Senior Drew Lied compiled a 2-1 singles record and lost in the third round of the singles main draw.
The doubles tandems of Pfister/Linders and Lied/Mullane each went 2-1 and lost in the third round. Davis/Zade and Forman/Jadun both went 0-1 after losing in the first round.
The Spartans will be back in action Oct. 25-28 as they head to West Lafayette, Ind., to compete in the Big Ten Indoors.
