KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Three Michigan State doubles teams each went 1-2 in the opening night of competition at the Western Michigan Invite Friday. The Spartans defeated teams from Western Michigan and Bradley in doubles play, while singles action will begin Saturday morning.

 

Sophomore Tyler Sauerbrey and junior Scott Rasmussen defeated Bryan Norville and Alejandro Staub of Western Michigan in first round action, 8-4, before falling in the next two matches to doubles teams from DePaul.

 

Freshman combo John Stratton and Billy Gardner downed WMU's Michael Calderone and Alex Birchmeier, 8-3, before also losing twice to DePaul.


 

 

 

Sophomore Jason Norville and freshman Clark Richardson dropped their first round match before defeating Michel Macara and Wilder Sampson of Bradley, 8-4, in the second round. Norville then teamed with sophomore Alex Allon in the next round, falling to Bradley's Richard Robertson and Vuk Bolic, 9-7.

 

"We started out strong, but we didn't finish with the energy we wanted," head coach Gene Orlando said. "But I thought we competed well."
