Men's Tennis Concludes Day Two of Big Ten Indoors
Oct. 31, 2009
EAST LANSING, Mich. -
The Michigan State men's tennis team came out strong in the first day of singles action at the Big Ten Indoors on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Four Spartans also competed in the second round of the main draw.
"It was a much better start today than yesterday," said assistant coach Matt Roberts. "You could tell the guys felt more comfortable. We had a chance for some of the guys to advance, but came up a little short. All-in-all, it was a better day and we now have the opportunity to go deep in the back draw, so we are counting on that."
The day began promising as senior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.), junior Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.), and sophomores Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) and Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) defeated their opponents in the first round, advancing to the second round of the main draw.
Norville took on Duncan Mull of Michigan and posted a 7-5, 6-3 win to continue on.
Brooks was down to Taylor Cohen of Penn State, but bounced back in the second set to defeat him, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Richardson defeated Iowa's Garret Dunn 6-3, 6-4, to advance to second round play. Hulewicz posted an identical score in his, 6-3, 6-4, win over Alex Sanborn.
Freshman Denis Bogatov (Gurnee, Ill.) fell to Chris Freeman of Wisconsin, but not without a fight. Bogatov pushed him into a tie-breaker in the first match but ultimately fell, 7-6(3), 7-5, for the closest match in the first round.
All four who went on to the second round of the main draw fell to their opponents, however, Brooks and Hulewicz each forced their opponents into a third set. Hulewicz came out dominating over Souza of Illinois, not allowing him to score a point, but fell, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Brooks began slowly against Bruche of Iowa, but came back to push him into that third set where he then forced him into a tie-breaker to end the match. Bruche came out with the win, defeating Brooks, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3).
Bogatov impressed in the second round of the backdraw, playing the last match of the day. Although he fell to Roth of Illinois, he fought his way through a three-set match, picking up the first, but giving up the final two, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.
Singles play will resume tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 1, at 8 a.m. at both the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility and the M.A.C. in East Lansing, Mich. For results at the end of each day, check back to msuspartans.com.
