MSU Men's Tennis Defeats Western Illinois and Xavier
Feb. 10, 2001 EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team defeated Western Illinois (7-0) and Xavier (6-1) today, Feb. 10, at the Michigan State Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartans began the day by winning all six singles matches against Western Illinois and then dropped one doubles match, but won the other two to take the doubles point to shutout Western Illinois. Freshman Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) defeated Sean Moran (WIU) at the No. 1 singles position, marking the first time Simonton played at the top spot. Paired with Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) at No. 1 doubles, they defeated Sean Moran and Matt Kinst (WIU) 8-4. The Spartans took all three doubles matches and dropped only one singles match to Xavier. Sophomore Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) defeated Aaron Bauer (XU) at the No. 3 singles position (6-3, 6-2). "These were two big wins. They were two teams we felt we needed to beat and did," said head coach Gene Orlando. "We knew we needed to dominate and control the match and that is exactly what we did. We have a big match coming up on Thursday as we face Notre Dame and so now it is time to prepare for that." The Spartans face No. 30 Notre Dame Thursday, Feb. 15, at 4:30 p.m., at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. MSU begins the Big Ten season at Northwestern on Saturday, Feb. 17.
