Three Spartans To Compete In ITA All-American Championships
Forman, Dube and Koenen to play against nation's top tennis players.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis will send the senior duo of Brett Forman and Michael Dube to compete for the Spartans at the 2017 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center from Saturday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 8. The tournament features top tennis talent from around the nation, as the top-ranked players from last season receive an automatic selection.
"It's the top, premier tournament of the fall season. The best players in the country are in attendance," head coach Gene Orlando, said. "We want to give Brett and Mike the opportunity to compete against the best. These are players that have the experience, and we want them to have the experience of playing at this level when the spring season comes. It's an opportunity for them."
Fall season began last weekend, when Forman, Dube and senior Jasper Koenen made an appearance at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. Forman and Dube both went 2-1 in individual matches, while Koenen was 0-2. Forman qualified for the main draw, advancing to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Koenen and Forman teamed up in doubles play, falling in a tight first match to Dylan Bednarczyk and Linus Erhart of Nebraska, 9-8.
"Last tournament definitely helped them for the All-American Championships," Orlando said. "We worked on some things and tightened them up this week, hopefully for better results this tournament. More importantly, it's a process. We're trying to get better every day, learn from these tournaments and keep growing."
The pre-qualifying draw will take place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1, followed by the qualifying draw from Oct. 2 to Oct. 3. The main draw begins on Oct. 5 and concludes on Oct. 9. Following ITA All-American Championships, the remaining team members will start off their fall season at the Notre Dame Invite on Oct. 6.
