EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team will hit the road for the first time this fall, as it heads to South Bend, Indiana for the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Play begins this Thursday, Oct. 21 and will continue through Monday, Oct. 25. The Spartans will be competing against teams from Cleveland State, DePaul, Detroit, Eastern Illinois, Green Bay, Illinois, Illinois State, IPFW, Marquette, Michigan, Notre Dame, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Ohio State, Toledo, University of Illinois-Chicago, Valparaiso, Western Michigan, Wisconsin and Youngstown State.
Junior Ronnie Hulewicz and sophomore Denis Bogatov will represent the Spartans in the singles main flight, as they face a pair of Buckeyes in the first round Peter Kobelt and Balazs Novak, respectively.
In the qualifying round, seniors Jason Norville and John Stratton will face Dominic McLuskey of Cleveland State and Chris Baum of Valparasio, respectively. Fellow seniors Austin Brooks and Clark Richardson will also be competing, as Brooks matches up against Robin Ravel of Marquette and Richardson is set to face Dennis Mya-Smith of Illinois State.
Rounding out the qualifying singles round for the Spartans are freshmen Aaron Pfister and Drew Lied. Pfister is scheduled for a first round match against Pablo Nunez of Detroit, while Lied will face Erik Finkenbrink of Green Bay. Both will be familiar faces as Detroit and Green Bay participated in the Stan Drobac Invitational two weeks ago in East Lansing.
Lied and Pfister will also be competing as a doubles pair, as they take on Andrews and Stahl from the host Fighting Irish. Bogatov and Hulewicz form the second pair, and are set to face Robles and Tepprt of Wisconsin.
The senior pairs of Stratton and Brooks, and Richardson and Norville round out the doubles draw for the Spartans, as Brooks and Stratton will face Hilgert and Race of Eastern Illinois, while Richardson and Norville match up against Cheung and Nunez of Detroit in the first round.
