EAST LANSING, Mich.-The Spartan men's tennis squad continued action on day three of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships today with both singles and doubles action. Competition began in singles play, where four Spartans were fighting to make the round of 16. Junior Aaron Pfister earned the lone Spartan victory in singles play with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Alex Pelaez of Illinois, before falling to Stephen Ho of Illinois 7-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Junior Drew Lied earned a victory in the consolation round for the Spartans over Spencer Newman of Michigan 6-3, 6-3.
Senior Will Davis, who earned his way into the main singles draw through three victories in the qualifying round, fell in a close match to Kevin Metka of Ohio State 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. Despite a strong effort in the second set, senior Denis Bogatov fell to Chris Jackman of Northwestern 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Sophomore Gijs Linders also fell in a tightly contested match to Dor Amir of Northern Illinois 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action, Bogatov and sophomore Harry Jadun earned a second round victory over Kang and Freitas of IPFW, 8-5 before falling to Talmadge and Andrew of Notre Dame 8-6. Pfister and Lied suffered a narrow defeat in the second round 9-8 (3).
The tournament will conclude on Monday with semi-finals and finals action, as well as doubles finals. No Spartans will be competing for the remainder of the tournament.
