EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team concludes its fall tournament season this weekend when it heads to Madison, Wis., to compete in the Big Ten Indoor Championships, Nov. 2-5. All Big Ten teams will be in attendance, with matches being held at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m. with doubles play on Friday.

Head coach Gene Orlando is excited to see the improvement in his squad before heading into the dual season, as well as how the rest of the conference is shaping up.

"We have a great opportunity to compete with the rest of the teams in the Big Ten and see how they rank. We use this event to evaluate where all of our players are as well and to help us set our lineup before January," Orlando said.

Junior Aaron Pfister was crowned the champion of the tournament last season, becoming the first Spartan to ever earn the honor.

"I don't think he was expecting to win it last year, but he continued to play well and got better in each match," Orlando said. There is certainly a different type of pressure on him to repeat, but it's all about getting better and ready to go."

In their previous outing, the Spartans hosted the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. MSU notched 15 total victories during the extended weekend, with twelve victories coming in singles play and three in doubles.

Senior Will Davis led the way for the Spartans with four singles victories. Davis earned three victories in the qualifying round before advancing to the main round, where he defeated Alan Reifer of Illinois-Chicago 6-1, 7-6 (2-0). Aaron Pfister advanced the furthest of any Spartan in the main singles bracket, earning two victories over Alexander Pelaez of Illinois State 7-6, 6-2 and Barrett Franks of Michigan 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action, Bogatov and sophomore Harry Jadun advanced to the round of sixteen as they earned two victories. The duo topped Frederic Cadieux and Dor Amir of Northern Illinois 8-5 in the first round and Joao Freitas and Daniel Kang of IPFW 8-5 in the second round.

The Spartans will continue action when they begin their dual match season on Jan. 12, when they host a double header against Wright State and Detroit.
