ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's track and field teams competed at Michigan for the Harold Silverston Classic on Saturday, Feb. 21 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The competition was held at the U-M Track Building with seniors Sarah Adelaine and Steve Manz leading the way in their individual events.

Manz came back this week to win the shot put (54-3 1/4) and place fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 52-6 3/4. Manz had won the shot put at every meet this season prior to last week's ISU Classic. Adelaine took event titles in the shot put and weight throw with tosses of 49-9 1/4 and 57-5, respectively.

Competing on the men's side, sophomore Brain Sherwood placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6-8 3/4, freshman Jason Brown finished in fourth in the shot put (51-1 1/2), freshman John Childress placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.23) and sophomore Mark Langlois also finished in fifth in the pole vault (15-6 ½).
 

 

On the women's side, freshman Katie Kelly placed second in the 3000-meter run with a season-best time of 10:08.39, while freshman Genevieve Gourlay finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9:15).

Competing in field events for the women, sophomore Taren James finished second in the long jump (18-9 1/4), junior Mickie Rzepka tied for fourth place in the pole vault (11-5 3/4) and freshman Michelle Rossio finished fourth in the shot put (45-4 1/4).

The Spartans will continue on the road next weekend when they travel to the Big Ten Indoor Championships hosted by Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
