SOUTH BEND, Ind.-The Michigan State men's track and field team competed, Saturday, April 3 at the Notre Dame Spring Opener. Due to technical difficulties, strong wind conditions and some unforeseen breakdowns at the finish line this past weekend, several of the events were mistimed, but have been made official today, Monday (April 5).

Top competitors for State include freshman James Pancoast, who won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.28, Julien Williams, who took the long jump title with a leap of 7.28m, junior Anthony Freeman, who captured the 400-meter dash title with a time of 49.33, and senior Steve Manz, who finished the shot put once again in first place with a toss of 18.55m, which was the second-best throw in MSU outdoor history.
 

 

Also competing well for the Spartans were freshman Matt Bartlebaugh, who finished second out of 19 competitors in the 5000-meter run (15:10.86), senior Charles Smith, who finished third in the javelin throw with a toss of 58.25m, sophomore Brad Gebauer, who placed third in the pole vault (4.88m), sophomore Carlos Alexander, who finished third in the 100-meter dash (10.68) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.11), sophomore Timothy O'Hara, who placed fourth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:15.77, freshman John Childress, who placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.80), sophomore Brian Sherwood, who finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.90m, junior Ricco Roby, who placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.88 and junior John Karanja, who placed fifth out of 13 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.26.

The MSU track and field teams will compete next at the Michigan State Invitational on Saturday, April 10 in East Lansing, Mich. Field events are set to begin at 10 a.m. EST, while track events are set for 1 p.m.
