RECORD: 9-12 overall, 3-8 Big Ten
UP NEXT: Thur.-Sat., March 20-22 NCAA Championships Cedar Falls, Iowa All Day
THIS WEEK: The Michigan State University wrestling team will send its trio of All-Americans to the NCAA Championships this week in Cedar Falls, Iowa. At 118 pounds, two-time Big Ten Champion David Morgan (Jr., Ferndale) will make his second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and his third overall. Morgan finished third last year, and before coming to MSU, Morgan qualified as a true freshman at Morgan State. Also qualifying for the second straight season is 1996 Big Ten Champion and 1997 runner-up at 190 pounds, Brian Picklo (Sr., Saginaw). Picklo finished fifth at last year's NCAA Tournament in only his first year as a starter. Rounding out the group is senior 177-pounder Erich Harvey (Allegan). This will mark the fourth straight season in which Harvey has qualified for the NCAA Championships, highlighted by a fifth-place finish last year.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS: Recapping two weeks ago, the Michigan State wrestling team finished 8th out of 11 teams (48.5 pts.) at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Iowa claimed its 24th straight team championship by finishing first, followed by Minnesota and Illinois.
On the individual side State qualified three wrestlers for the NCAA Championships: Morgan, Harvey, and Picklo. Morgan claimed his second straight Big Ten title at 118 pounds, while Picklo finished second, and Harvey third.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES: With his second straight Big Ten championship, Morgan became the first Spartan to win back-to-back championships since Tom Milkovich won four straight titles at 134/142 pounds from 1970-73. Tom's brother Pat won three titles, but each one was separated by a year (1972 74-76)...Morgan enters the NCAA Tournament with a team-best 36-4 record, including a perfect 20-0 mark in the Big Ten. His career record now stands at 80-7, good for 16th on the all-time MSU list, while his .919 career winning percentage ranks sixth...Picklo's season mark now stands at 34-7, 16-2 in the Big Ten, and Harvey checks in at 33-6, 13-3 in the conference, including a team-high 14 pins.
