MSU Captain Named Pre-Season All-America
Morgan to Begin Season Ranked No. 2
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State University senior David Morgan has been named a preseason All-America by the Amateur Wrestling News. Morgan, an All-America in 1995-96 and 1996-97, will begin the season ranked No. 2 at 118 pounds in the Amateur Wrestling News pre-season poll.
After finishing third at that weight in 95-96, Morgan ended last season with a fifth-place showing at the NCAA Championships. The Ferndale native won his second consecutive Big Ten Championship at 118, ending the campaign with a 41-6 overall record, 21-1 in the Big Ten, including nine falls.
Morgans 41 wins last season and 44 victories the previous year are the No. 3 and No. 1 single season victory totals, respectively, in Michigan State wrestling history.
"David is our unquestioned leader," says MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "We flat-out expect him to contend for the national title."
Teague Moore of Oklahoma State, who defeated Morgan twice last season, will begin the season ranked No. 1 at 118 pounds.
The Big Ten again looks to be one of the toughest wrestling conferences in the country. The league places three teams among the top four in the Amateur Wrestling News poll, and eight in the top 20. Also, the conference boasts 33 individuals ranked in the top eight in their weight class, including six who hold down the No. 1 spot.
Michigan State will begin its wrestling season by hosting the Michigan State Open Tournament, November 15-16 at Jenison Fieldhouse.
