The Michigan State Spartan wrestling team, led by head coach Tom Minkel, has been recognized for its achievement in the classroom by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). The Spartans earned All-Academic Team honors by ranking No. 17 in the NCAA with a cumulative team GPA of 3.087. Sophomore Ryan Watts has been named NWCA Individual All-Academic team.
Dan Osterman and Michael McClure were each eliminated in session three of the NCAA Championships on Friday evening. Senior Dan Osterman lost his consolation match at 149 pounds to No. 3 seed Donald Vinson of Binghamton, 7-2. McClure won his first match in session three but lost by fall in his next match to Matthew Gibson of Iowa State, ending Michigan State's run in Des Moines.
Sophomore Ryan Watts and fellow sophomore John Rizqallah were each eliminated on Thursday night in session two of the 2013 NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Watts and Rizqallah were each wrestling their first NCAA Championships and fell in the consolation round. Both Dan Osterman and Michael McClure also lost second round championship matches but will wrestle tomorrow in session three.
The NCAA Championships kicked off Thursday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Arena with first-round matches. No. 8 seed Michael McClure and senior Dan Osterman each recorded victories for MSU, while Ryan Watts and John Rizqallah each dropped their first matches.
The Michigan State wrestling team heads to the NCAA Championships this weekend (March 21-23) in Des Moines, Iowa, at Wells Fargo Arena. Dan Osterman (149 pounds), Ryan Watts (157), John Rizqallah (184) and Michael McClure (HWT) will represent MSU at the NCAA Championships. McClure is the No. 8 seed at heavyweight.
