Spartans Fall to No. 21 Purdue at Home, 26-10

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling lost to No. 21 Purdue on Friday night at Jenison Field House, 26-10. John Rizqallah picked up an 11-1 major decision at 184 pounds and David Cheza earned a 10-4 decision at 157 pounds; both remain undefeated in duals this season. No. 5 Michael McClure also improved to 18-1 with an 8-1 win over Alex White.

"There were some matches that we wrestled pretty well," head coach Tom Minkel said. "David Cheza wrestled well, as did Rizqallah, and Mike McClure wrestled exceptionally well. But there were too many matches that we wrestled average. Purdue is too good of a team to coast by any of their kids."

Senior David Cheza defeated Tommy Churchard of Purdue, 10-4, at 157 pounds. Cheza led 5-1 after two takedowns in the first period and added two additional takedowns, one each in both the second and third periods. Cheza didn't give up a takedown and added 1:41 of ride time to win his fifth straight dual match.

The Spartans (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten) opened the dual at 174 pounds and Jordan Wohlfert lost by fall to Chad Welch of Purdue in 3:37. The Boilermakers (10-2, 1-0) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead.

John Rizqallah scored an 11-1 major decision over Andy Wiseman of Purdue at 184 pounds. Rizqallah notched a takedown in the first period and added three near fall points in the second to take a 5-0 lead. He added two more takedowns in the third period and added 4:49 of ride time to complete the major decision.

At 197 pounds, Luke Jones lost a narrow 2-0 decision to No. 17 Braden Atwood, without giving up a takedown. Atwood recorded an escape in the second and had 1:47 of ride time to steal the decision.



Michael McClure dominated Alex White of Purdue in the heavyweight class with an 8-1 decision. McClure scored a takedown in each period, and only gave up an escape to White.

The Spartans dropped the next four matches at 125, 133, 141 and 149 pounds. Brenan Lyon fell to No. 17 Camden Eppert at 125 pounds, 6-2. Cashé Quiroga won a major decision over Brandon Fifield at 133 pounds, 17-7. Nick Trimble lost to Brandon Nelsen at 141, 8-1.

Junior Dan Osterman lost a major decision to No. 13 Ivan Lopouchanski at 149 pounds, 9-1. Osterman was nearly pinned in the first period but was able to battle off Lopouchanski, giving up three near fall points instead.

Nick Proctor lost a narrow 7-5 to Pat Robinson at 165 pounds. Proctor led 5-4 late in the third period but gave up a point for stalling and a takedown with just 19 seconds remaining, giving Purdue the 26-10 win.

The Spartans are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 6 and host both Bucknell and Lindsey Wilson. The dual with the Bison will start at 12 p.m. and MSU will face Lindsey Wilson at 2 p.m.
