MSU Drops Conference Opener To Iowa
No. 18 Javier Gasca posted a fall to earn six points for the Spartans
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Michigan State wrestling battled No. 7-ranked Iowa on Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, falling in the first conference dual meet of the season, 49-6.
"As a team tonight, we showed up for a fist fight and tried to wrestle our way through it. Give Iowa credit, they came to dictate the pace and did so," Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler said. "As a team, we have to wrestle an entire match individually for seven minutes without letting up."
Ranked at No. 18, Javier Gasca led the way for the Spartans at 141 pounds, pinning Hawkeye redshirt freshman Carter Happel in the second period at 4:04. It was the 30th dual win of Gasca's career, and his third fall of the season out of 14 matches overall. Gasca is now tied for third on the team in pins.
"It was good to see Javier get back and wrestle through a tough situation, and turn it into a positive result for himself, " Chandler said. "He got taken down and didn't panic, kept his composure and stayed true to his style of wrestling."
Five of Iowa's wrestlers entered Friday's dual nationally ranked, and the Hawkeyes are undefeated through eight duals this season. The Spartans fall to 4-3 overall, and 0-1 in Big Ten matches.
