Coach Minkel Podcast

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team fell to No. 4 Penn State, 36-6, Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Over 3,000 spectators took in the dual that served as a feature event for the Spartan Country youth tournament in an attempt to bridge collegiate and youth wrestling in the same setting.

"It is nice to have an event like this in conjunction with the youth tournament because youth wrestling is very important to collegiate wrestling," head coach Tom Minkel said. "We have to foster youth wrestling in the state of Michigan in order for collegiate wrestling to go to the next level."

The dual got started in the heavyweight division, as Steve Andrus took on No. 6 Cameron Wade of Penn State. Wade started strong in the first period and got out to a 5-0 start. Andrus picked up a third period takedown but did not have enough for the upset. Wade picked up an 8-3 decision and Penn State had an early 3-0 lead.

At 125 pounds, Eric Olanowski took on No. 13 Nico Megaludis. Olanowski was awarded six points after an illegal move on Megaludis was called 3:35 into the match, leaving Olanowski unable to compete. Megaludis was disqualified and the Spartans led 6-3.

Brandon Fifield lost a 7-5 decision to Frank Martellotti of Penn State at 133 pounds. Fifield scored a reversal in the third, tying the score at 5 but a late escape and riding time for Martellotti was the difference.

In the 141-pound division Brian Gibbs was pinned by Bryan Pearsall of Penn State in 6:21. Penn State went up 12-6.

No. 18 Dan Osterman squared off against No. 1 Frank Molinaro at 149 pounds and lost a tough 9-3 decision. Osterman started quickly with a takedown just 12 seconds into the match and was down 3-2 after the first period. Molinaro added two takedowns, an escape and added 2:13 of ride time for the win.

"Danny is making progress," Minkel said. "Danny aspires to be on the podium at the end of the year and you have Frank Molinaro, an NCAA finalist last year, that's the standard right now and I thought Danny competed very well."

No. 14 Anthony Jones Jr. dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Dylan Alton of Penn State at 157 pounds. Neither wrestler scored in the first or second periods and an escape in the third was the lone difference.

At 165 pounds David Cheza lost a 13-5 major decision to No. 1 David Taylor. Curran Jacobs dropped a 17-2 tech. fall to No. 2 Ed Ruth at 174 pounds.

Red-shirt freshman John Rizqallah came out strong but lost by fall to No. 5 Quentin Wright in 5:52 in the 184-pound class. Rizqallah had a takedown and three near fall points in the first period but came up short against the defending NCAA champion from a season ago.

Fellow red-shirt freshman Nick McDiarmid gave a tough effort but lost to No. 10 Morgan McIntosh, 7-5 at 197 pounds. McDiarmid led late in the third period 5-4 but McIntosh manufactured a takedown and added 1:21 of ride time to take the decision. Penn State won the dual, 36-6.

Michigan State is back in action on Friday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. against West Virginia at Jenison Field House and Sunday, Jan. 15 against Indiana at 2 p.m.
