Jan. 13, 2012
Podcasts: Coach Minkel | Curran Jacobs EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team lost 23-12 to non-conference foe West Virginia on Friday night at Jenison Field House. The Spartans dropped the first four duals of the match, then won three straight but could not overcome the deficit. "We got in such a hole, and we lost some momentum at the same time," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "When you lose three or four in a row, especially to start out the dual, it's hard to turn the ship around. And that was the case tonight." At 125 pounds Brenan Lyon lost to No. 20 Shane Young of WVU, 11-3. Brandon Fifiled dropped a major decision to Nathan Pennesi, 8-0, at 133 pounds. Brian Gibbs lost by fall to Michael Morales of West Virginia in 3:20 and MSU fell behind 14-0. No. 18 Dan Osterman lost a close decision to Brutus Scheffel of WVU at 149 pounds, 9-6. The score was knotted at six in the second period but Scheffel managed a takedown and added an escape in the third period to secure the win. Michigan State (2-4) got on the board after No. 13 Anthony Jones Jr. won a 4-2 decision over Dominic Prezzia of WVU in the 157-pound match. A second period takedown for Jones was the difference. The Spartans trailed, 17-3, heading into intermission. "Danny got in a tough match (at 149) that kind of got away from him, then Anthony got us back in it (at 157)," Minkel said. "But again, we never really quite got it going." In the 165-pound match, David Cheza recorded a 5-0 shutout decision over Kyle Eason of WVU. Cheza had a first period takedown, a reverse in the second period and added riding time to finish off the victory.
Curran Jacobs avenged a previous loss this season in the Reno Tournament of Champions to No. 19 Lance Bryson of WVU. Jacobs secured the 3-1 decision victory after a takedown with only seven seconds remaining in the match. "I thought about my loss in Reno (to Bryson) which was in overtime," said Jacobs. "Heading into tonight's match, I didn't forget that. I remembered what he brought to the mat - I knew what I had to do, went in there with a strategy, and it ended up going well for me. "It was like a chess match out there. There weren't a lot of takedowns happening, but the intensity was there. For the final 20 seconds or whatever it was, I just exploded in one of my head down, double-leg blasts, and I picked it up and got the takedown." At 184 pounds John Rizqallah lost a tough match to No. 17 Matt Ryan. The score was tied at two after the end of three periods but 2:36 of ride time in favor of Ryan awarded him the 3-2 decision. Nick McDiarmid picked up his second career dual victory with a 7-2 win over Mac Mancuso of WVU at 197 pounds. In the heavyweight matchup, Steve Andrus dropped a 6-4 decision to Brandon Williamson of WVU, giving the Mountaineers (3-2) a 23-12 victory over Michigan State. The Spartans will face Indiana on Sunday at Jenison Field House at 2 p.m. Admission to Sunday's match will be free as part of fan appreciation day.
