Spartan Wrestling Falls to No. 4 Iowa, 27-12

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling fell at home to No. 4 Iowa (14-1, 4-0) Big Ten on Sunday afternoon, 27-12. The Spartans (4-7, 0-4) picked up wins at 149 pounds, 184 pounds and heavyweight. Sophomore John Rizqallah upset No. 11 Ethen Lofthouse, 6-3, picking up his 10th dual victory of the season to lead all Spartans in dual wins on the season.
"We knew it was going to be a fight and our kids were prepared for that," head coach Tom Minkel said. "I think we wrestled hard and as physical as we have all year. This was our most intense dual of the year and the best we have wrestled all season."
The dual got started at 125 pounds and Brenan Lyon fell to No. 1 Matt McDonough of Iowa, 8-2. The Spartans lost the next two weight classes by major decision, giving Iowa an early 11-0 lead.
Senior Dan Osterman put MSU on the board with a 10-4 decision over No. 17 Michael Kelly at 149 pounds. The Carson City, Mich., native picked up a quick takedown just 25 seconds into the match and led 4-2 after the first period. Osterman scored another takedown in the second and third periods, while only giving up escape points to Kelly, and added 1:46 of riding time to seal the decision.
John Rizqallah led No. 11 Ethen Lofthouse 3-2 after two periods and added a third period takedown and 1:16 of ride time to complete the upset decision. Rizqallah won his 10th dual of the season and improved to 20-5 overall.
Luke Jones fell to Nathan Burak of Iowa at 197 pounds, 7-4, and Iowa choose to forfeit the heavyweight class, bringing the final score to 27-12.
