No. 9 Mike McClure Upsets No. 1 Adam Coon at Heavyweight, 5-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Senior heavyweight and ninth-ranked Mike McClure upset top-ranked Adam Coon of Michigan, 5-1, but the Michigan State wrestling team fell to the No. 12 Wolverines, 26-6, Friday night at Cliff Keen Arena. Nick McDiarmid was also victorious for MSU at 197 pounds.
McClure improved his record to 18-4 with a convincing win over Coon, a true freshman who entered the match 23-0 and was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after beating two-time defending national champion and second-ranked Tony Nelson of Minnesota last Sunday. It marked the first loss of Coon's career.
Michigan (8-2, 4-0 Big Ten) won the first two matches of the dual at 174 and 184 pounds to take a 6-0 lead. Collin Zeerip edged Nick Kaczanowski at 174 pounds, 3-2, while Domenic Abounader upset No. 18 John Rizqallah at 184, 6-0, in the first tiebreaker.
At 197, McDiarmid put MSU on the board by winning his sixth dual match of the season with a 3-1 decision over junior Chris Heald. McDiarmid pushed his overall record to 13-6.
The Spartans (5-7, 0-4) tied the dual at 6 following McClure's victory against Coon.
Michigan State then fell in back-to-back matches at 125 and 133 pounds as the Wolverines regained control of the dual. Brenan Lyon lost to Conor Youtsey at 125, 5-0, and Garth Yenter fell 2-0 to Rosario Bruno.
Michigan recorded two straight major decisions at 141 and 149 to jump out to a 20-6 lead.
At 157 pounds, Roger Wildmo lost a hard-fought match to No. 13 Brian Murphy, 4-2, while Bobby Nash dropped an 8-2 decision to seventh-ranked Dan Yates in the final bout at 165 pounds.
Michigan State returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. as it plays host to No. 15 Illinois at Jenison Field House.
